Zunte & NUKU Mezcal: A Sisterhood of Mezcal

The story of Zunte and NUKU Mezcal begins in 2010 with the shared vision of sisters Mariana and Karen Garduño. Driven by ambition and a deep commitment to social responsibility, they embarked on a transformative journey into the heart of Mexico's mezcal-producing regions. Their quest for authenticity led them first to Oaxaca, a land steeped in rich cultural heritage and renowned for its artisanal mezcal production.

For months, they immersed themselves in the Oaxacan landscape, visiting over 50 traditional palenques (small, family-run distilleries). They learned the ancient techniques, meticulously passed down through generations of mezcaleros, forging strong bonds with the local communities. This profound experience formed the foundation for Zunte Mezcal, a spirit designed not only to showcase the exceptional quality of Oaxacan mezcal but also to empower the very people who create it.

Their journey didn't end in Oaxaca. The sisters' passion for mezcal led them to the picturesque valley of Atlixco, in Puebla, nestled at the foot of the majestic Popocatépetl volcano. Here, amidst breathtaking scenery and rich volcanic soil, they discovered a new expression of mezcal. Drawing upon the knowledge and traditions inherited from the best mezcal masters of the Poblana region, they created NUKU Mezcal.

The name NUKU, of Mixtec origin, translates to "to celebrate." This perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the mezcal itself – a vibrant reflection of the region's festive culture and the joy of sharing traditions. Made with 100% agave espadín, grown in the ancient valleys, NUKU boasts fresh, aromatic notes, uniquely influenced by its volcanic terroir. Both Zunte and NUKU stand as testaments to the Garduño sisters' dedication to artisanal excellence, sustainable practices, and the enduring spirit of Mexican mezcal.
